Annual Design and Sustainability Awards to recognize 3 Piedmont homeowners for green home design

Susan Miller Davis and Jonathan Davis have been electrifying their home since 2011.

Design & Sustainability Awards Gala
Wednesday, May 14, 5:30 p.m.
Piedmont Community Hall, 711 Highland Avenue

Now in their second year, the Sustainability Awards honor Piedmonters who have taken green home design to an exceptional level.

The Sustainability Awards add a new dimension to the Planning Commission’s longstanding Design Awards program, which recognizes home renovation projects that reflect the highest level of design excellence among all the Commission has reviewed. The addition of award categories showcasing green improvements is part of the City’s ongoing commitment to helping community members incorporate more sustainable choices into their homes and daily lives.

The 2025 Sustainability Award honorees are:

• James Glauber and Tracy Lieu of 38 Estrella Avenue
Glauber and Lieu began their transition to clean energy in 2021, when they installed their first set of solar panels. Since then, they’ve expanded their solar PV system, added battery storage, and systematically replaced traditional gas appliances with electric alternatives.

Beyond embracing electrification on his own property, Glauber has made a mission of helping others electrify, hosting informational tours and advising neighbors in his capacity as an Electrify America certified home electrification coach.

• Susan Miller-Davis and Jonathan Davis of 139 Lake Avenue
Early adopters of the sustainable design movement, Miller-Davis and Davis began incorporating green features into their home in 2011. Their property now boasts enhanced insulation, Level 1 and Level 2 EV chargers, and an all-electric ADU equipped with mini-split heating, an induction cooktop, and a heat pump washer-dryer unit.

Owners of 335 Sea View Avenue
After two years of work, these residents are nearing completion on a comprehensive sustainable renovation of their mid 20th-Century home. HVAC heat pumps, an induction cooktop, energy efficient lighting, and EPA EnergyStar certified windows all contribute to a reduced carbon footprint without sacrificing personal comfort.

If you’ve been considering upgrading to a heat pump, adding solar panels, and or installing EV chargers on your property, Wednesday’s gala offers a unique opportunity to hear directly from neighbors who have done it all about lessons learned, the contractors they choose, and incentive programs that supported their projects.
