Beach volleyball in Piedmont? Take the survey

A subcommittee established by the Piedmont Recreation Commission would like to hear from Piedmont residents about volleyball.

Piedmont community members have asked the Recreation Commission to consider the possibility of creating beach volleyball courts in Piedmont. The Commission would like your input.  Please take a short survey HERE. The survey will end on May 10, 2022. The Commission hopes to learn what types of volleyball activities Piedmonters would like to see in the coming months.

Commissioners Dick Carter, Lisa Gardner and Aamir Virani will host three in-person opportunities where Piedmonters are invited to discuss volleyball. The sessions will be at the Exedra Vase on:

  • Monday, May 2, 2022 from 8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.
  • Tuesday, May 3, 2022 from 1:30 p.m.- 2:30 p.m.
  • Friday, May 5, 2022 from 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

“We hope our neighbors will share their thoughts on volleyball and Piedmont Recreation,” said subcommittee chair Aamir Virani. “Our city government wants to prioritize what is important to our residents, and we can only do that if we hear from you.  Please take the survey, email us, or visit us.”

Piedmonters can also send their thoughts by emailing piedmont.bvb@gmail.com.

  1. Volleyball is fun for the entire family. We normally would need to drive 6 hours to Santa Barbara to find a sand court for volleyball. It would be much more convenient to have a court in town

  2. Sand courts would be a wonderful addition to all the recreational facilities in the community. Sand courts would allow players of any age to practice in their free time when gyms are not accessible. I hope that this becomes a reality!

  3. This is an exciting development! Volleyball is a life sport that can be learned at all ages. Sand courts can be a fun recreational gathering place for tots to seniors.

According to the National Federation of High School Sports, volleyball is among the most popular girls sports and is among the fastest growing boys sports in the country.

Piedmont High School had 11 players on last year’s boys’ varsity volleyball team (after a 20 year hiatus of not fielding a team). This year there are 12 varsity players and 15 JV players.

Girls Beach Volleyball will be recognized as an official sport by California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) and the PHS teams will need a place to play during the Spring 2023 season. No doubt that CIF will recognize boys’ beach volleyball (a fall sport) soon.

The closest sand courts are in Alameda, Berkekey, Moraga,Walnut Creek, and San Francisco. Very much in favor of building courts in Piedmont!

  4. We would love beach volleyball courts in Piedmont! This school year 55 girls tried out for the Piedmont High School Girl’s Volleyball teams…which was the largest student-athlete turnout for all fall sports: more than football, tennis, cross country, waterpolo, cheer, and golf. Volleyball continues to soar in popularity, from younger kids to teens.

Sand courts would be shared space for the entire Piedmont community: bonus play space for toddlers (particularly during school weekday mornings), potential camps for elementary kids via the Piedmont Rec Dept and PHS Girls and Boys Varsity teams, an outdoor hang-out for tweens & teens (recreational and competitive play), adults, and friends and family fun.

On a personal note, my kids and their friends have tried setting up a volleyball net at different places around town for an afternoon pick-up game, and have been told by adults multiple times to take down their net. Currently it seems the only way for teens in town to play volleyball is for the sport to be in-season (to play indoors in Binks or Morrison gym with a coach), or work through the Piedmont Recreation Department (and that takes coordination + $). I know this is an amazing community that supports its kids, loves their sports, and I want to again thank the City of Piedmont and the Recreation Commission for their collaboration in exploring beach volleyball courts as a possibility within Piedmont.
