University of Texas, Piedmont Police to give update on bias and ‘calls for service’ research

The Piedmont Police Department posted the following information on social media on Friday, Feb. 25

The topic of bias, and the types of calls for service to which Piedmont police officers respond, are subjects of research by the University of Texas, San Antonio. On July 19, 2021, the City Council approved an agreement with UTSA to conduct an analysis of these calls.

UTSA Professors Michael Smith and Robert Tillyer facilitated focus groups with community stakeholders in September of 2021. Professors Smith and Tillyer worked with Department staff and the Department’s records management vendor to extract the data necessary for their analysis. You’re Invited to a community update on the Police Data Analysis Project with the University of Texas, San Antonio on March 2, 2022, at 6:00 pm. This remote meeting will enable City staff and the UTSA researchers to provide an update on progress made, the anticipated completion date of the project, and provide an opportunity for the public to ask questions.
