Piedmont residents were kept up Monday night by howling winds that swept through the region overnight and persisted into Tuesday. Winds ranging from 38 to 64 mph were recorded in the Oakland and Berkeley Hills in the early morning hours, according to a National Weather Service report Tuesday morning.

The dry, windy weather sparked numerous fires around the region, especially in Santa Cruz and San Mateo Counties.
