Responding to the “Piedmont Protectors” Instagram account created last summer, where students could “anonymously report stories of sexual assault, harassment, abuse, and rape within Piedmont,” PHS students and Piedmont for Consent co-presidents Kaeli Huh and Anna Gotto, along with faculty mentor Kimberly Taylor, have been working to facilitate conversations about consent — defined in this context as an agreement between participants to engage in sexual activity.
The upcoming workshop will highlight consent, boundaries, communication, physiological defense responses to stressful situations, unhealthy behaviors, alcohol and other drugs, reporting, and resources to continue the discussion and to get help.
The Consent Workshop was conceived when it was determined that the annual in-person Consent Assembly was not adaptable to an online setting. The hope is that the workshop will be a regular addition to the annual Consent Assembly when it returns in-person. In the meantime, the workshop will kick off this year’s Consent Education for the Piedmont community.
The Schedule
For parents: A parent workshop will be held on Monday, February 8 at 7:00 p.m. on Zoom previewing the content that the students will be discussing in the workshop that week.
For students:
- On Wednesday, February 10, and Friday, February 12, students from “Piedmont for Consent” will lead a Consent Workshop to all 2nd period classes at PHS/MHS.
- On Thursday, February 25 from 3:15-4:30, the Piedmont for Consent group will be hosting a discussion/debrief of the workshop to any interested student in their weekly meeting.
