Piedmont Adult School will once again offer Understanding Modern Art, a popular two-session class that helps participants better understand the ideas, artists, and movements that shaped modern art and continue to influence art today. The class will meet Monday and Wednesday, January 12 and January 14, 2026, from 7:00–9:00 pm.
This richly illustrated class explores major artists and styles that led to the emergence of modern art beginning in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Art movements covered include Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Expressionism, Metaphysical Art, Dada, Surrealism, and others as time allows. Participants will also be introduced to basic art vocabulary and terms to help them more confidently describe and discuss works of art.
Rather than a chronological survey, the course offers an informal sampling and analysis of influential artists and styles, emphasizing ideas and approaches that continue to shape contemporary art. The class is designed for curious beginners as well as experienced museum-goers, and no prior art background is required.
The course is taught by Robert Simons, a studio artist and teacher with over forty years of experience. He is a professor emeritus of Holy Names University in Oakland, where he also served as Director of the Arts Center for 14 years. Robert approaches art as a discipline deeply connected to the historical, cultural, and social contexts from which it emerged.
