The Lake School, founded by Piedmont families in 1981, is welcoming prospective families to tour its Oakland campus ahead of the 2027–28 school year.
Located in Oakland’s Lake Merritt neighborhood, The Lake School offers a play-based learning environment where young children are encouraged to explore, discover, and grow. In March 2026, the school welcomed new Head of School Awa Gaye, who brings decades of experience supporting children through preschool.
The Lake School celebrates each child’s individual strengths, interests and developmental needs. Teachers develop curriculum that responds to children’s curiosity and encourages learning through play and exploration.
The core program runs daily until 12:45 p.m., with flexible aftercare available until 5 p.m. Enrichment opportunities include yoga, phonics, Spanish, and science. Families may choose enrollment options of 2 to 5 days per week.
