Letter to the Editor | Nancy Beninati’s civil rights background is right for City Council

Nancy Beninati would be an excellent addition to the Piedmont City Council, not only because of her experience in government and public policy at the California Department of Justice, but also because of her deep understanding of policing and public safety. Nancy drafted California’s Racial and Identity Profiling regulations and has worked with dozens of police departments, including San Francisco, to develop policies and implement reforms.

I joined the Piedmont Police Department in 2014 and had the honor of serving as Piedmont’s police chief from 2016 until my retirement in 2025. I met Nancy after I became chief, and she volunteered her time to work with me on bias free policing as well as presenting to the community on racial profiling.

What sets Nancy apart is her civil rights background and her ability to work collaboratively with law enforcement to achieve results. She understands that protecting civil rights and maintaining effective public safety go hand in hand, with the shared goal of ensuring that law enforcement provides the highest level of service to the community it serves.

I know how much Piedmont values public safety, and I am confident Nancy will bring the experience, judgment, and collaborative approach needed to help preserve it. I strongly encourage Piedmont voters to support Nancy for City Council.
