Storm preparedness a year-round effort
Much of the City’s storm preparedness happens long before winter arrives. Ongoing work like maintaining storm drains and managing the City’s urban forest help reduce risks and supports a faster response when severe weather strikes. Beyond routine maintenance, the City has made major investments in infrastructure in recent years to better manage heavy rainfall and reduce flooding risks, including storm drain upgrades at eight locations and Piedmont’s first green infrastructure bioswale, designed to capture and absorb stormwater runoff, both completed in 2025.
During major storms, responding to hazards like fallen trees, flooding, and blocked roads often requires multiple departments working together. The presentation will highlight how City staff coordinate personnel, equipment, and information to address changing conditions, keep roads accessible, and respond to emergencies.
The presentation will also address how the City keeps residents informed during storms and steps community members can take to prepare their own homes and households.
