Girls tennis | Piedmont takes 2 of 3

Piedmont High School’s girls tennis team took two of three matches to improve to 9-3 on the season.

On Sept. 29, the Highlanders defeated visiting College Prep, 6-1. Ella Ruthven led a sweep of the singles matches, beating Lulu Simons at No. 1, 6-0, 6-2. Faith Chin downed Surina Pugh at No. 2, 6-0, 6-3. Maddy Huynh shut out Sophia Roh at No. 3, 6-0, 6-0. Leela Sivakumar defeated Emmeline Lew at No. 4, 6-2, 7-6 (5).

Piedmont’s Emma Chan and Chiara Silvio beat Audree Haque and Riya Mandal at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, 6-2. Mai Pham and Layla Reed-Miguel defeated Lucia Newton and Evelyn Wan at No. 3, 6-0, 6-0. College Prep’s Maya Alhamadsheh and Jessie Hu outlasted Ella Thomasson and Paige Chin at No. 2, 4-6, 6-0, 10-3.

On Sept. 30, the Highlanders fell to visiting Head-Royce, 4-3. The teams split the singles, with Piedmont’s Huynh defeating Sofia Salgado Manson at No. 3, 7-5, 6-1 and Sivakumar beating Dakota Marble at No. 4, 6-4, 6-2.

The Jayhawks’ Mia Huang outlasted Ruthven at No. 1, 6-2, 4-6, 10-7. Isabela Salgado Manso beat Chin at No. 2, 6-4, 6-2.

In doubles, Thomasson and Pham defeated Alisha Mehta and Kamara Dewey at No. 2, 7-6 (3), 6-3. Head-Royce’s Julia Xing and Allison Au beat Chan and Silvio at No. 1, 6-3, 7-6 (6). Ariela Xu and Eliza Berry downed Reed-Miguel and Amalia Angulo at No. 3, 6-3, 6-1.

On Oct. 1, the Highlanders defeated host Castro Valley, 6-1. Piedmont swept the doubles with Chan and Silvio outlasting Kaylie Ly and Ellysandra Ly at No. 1, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 10-6. Reed-Miguel and Pham downed Emily Holstead and Janani Rajalinam at No. 2, 6-1, 6-1. Amelia Oldrin and Penelope Welch beat Ava Zakai and Hailey Magno at No. 3, 6-3, 6-0.

In singles, Ruthven defeated Sophia Lopez at No. 1, 6-1, 6-2. Chin downed Claire Lu at No. 2 by identical scores. Huynh shut out Kaylee Cheng at No. 3, 6-0, 6-0. The Trojans’ Alisha Wong beat Ella Sharafi at No. 4, 6-2, 6-1.

Piedmont is scheduled to play at Justin-Siena-Napa on Oct. 7.
