Oakland Unified School District must take steps to address allegations of antisemitism and discrimination against Jewish and Israeli students following an order from an Alameda County Superior Court judge.
The California Department of Education had previously ordered corrective actions for the district to implement, which were found to have not been fulfilled. OUSD will now have to hold a mandatory training session for staff and students, as well as a public meeting to address the departments’ findings, among other actions.
In December 2025, the district acknowledged pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel messages, lessons and visual displays, which Jewish and Israeli students said made them feel unsafe, according to a media release issued by Oakland-based attorney Marleen Sacks, who has represented Jewish families.
“For nearly three years, the District has repeatedly covered up, enabled, endorsed, and refused to effectively address the pervasive discrimination against Jews and Israelis. The District refused or otherwise failed to comply with CDE’s multiple corrective actions by the deadlines. Unfortunately, it took a court order to finally ensure that the CDE remedies are implemented,” said Sacks in a statement.
