Highlanders get big win
Piedmont High School’s girls football team got a huge win over San Lorenzo on September 17 at Witter Field, hammering the Grizzlies, 47-0.
The Highlanders are now 5-6 on the season, 5-2 in West Alameda County Conference play.
Skye Prata Baack, Edie Elmquist and Avahnea Mafi each scored two touchdowns to lead Piedmont. Elmquist also had two touchdown passes and threw for 82 yards. Cory Minor also returned an interception for a touchdown.
“It’s actually my first year playing,” Prata Baack said. “Starting out it was hard to adjust. Now, I feel like as a team we’ve had so much time together that we really feel that connection. I feel we’re really able to execute down the field and the energy was really good tonight.
“Everyone’s finding their position they feel the best in.”
The Highlanders intercepted five passes: Beatrice Nackley had two while Minor, Maddie Lee and Sydney Latvala had one apiece.

On September 15, Piedmont fell at Hayward, 36-6. The Farmers are undefeated in WACC play. On September 10, the Highlanders defeated visiting Tennyson, 18-0. Elmquist threw for 103 yards and three touchdowns. Maddie Lee had a sack while she and Mafi each had four tackles. Latvala intercepted two passes.
On September 8, Piedmont beat American on the road, 33-6. On September 5, the Highlanders lost to visiting St. Ignatius, 38-0. On September 3, the Highlanders edged San Leandro at home, 14-13.
