Fifth graders wait for the bell to ring at Beach Elementary School on Aug. 10, 2026

Central Piedmont was abuzz with activity as a new school year got underway on Monday.

New traffic patterns around Havens Elementary School caused some back-ups on Bonita Avenue, which is now a one-way street between Vista and Oakland avenues, but otherwise the back-to-school scene was the same as it ever was.

High schoolers returned to campus briefly the previous Friday for walk-through registration, where they picked up their schedules, got their school-issued Chromebooks (nary a textbook in sight), and took care of other administrative tasks.
