Good news for animal lovers. Some animal shelters will waive adoption fees this weekend as part of a nationwide effort to help more shelter pets find homes.
Berkeley Humane’s Bark and Meow Around the Block, billed on its website as “California’s largest single-location adoption event,” runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 2700 Ninth St., Berkeley. Most adoption fees are waived or reduced, according to the organization website. More than 30 Bay Area and regional shelters and rescue organizations are participating, along with food trucks and live entertainers. The event is part of Clear the Shelters, a nationwide campaign aimed at finding homes for shelter animals.
The San Francisco SPCA will host its one-day adoption event from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at its Adoption Center at 250 Florida St. The event is also part of Clear the Shelters.
The San Francisco SPCA will have puppies, kittens, dogs, and cats available for adoption, and fees will be waived for adult cats and dogs 5 months and older through its “Name Your Price” promotion.

Other San Francisco shelters will also participate Saturday, including Muttville and San Francisco Animal Care and Control, giving prospective adopters more options to meet animals in need of homes.
The event will include family-friendly activities, food and treats for purchase, program booths and a Pooch Smooch Booth featuring SF SPCA Animal-Assisted Therapy Ambassadors. San Francisco Animal Care and Control will also have a booth with adoptable rabbits and guinea pigs.
