Donald Evans has been selected to serve as Piedmont’s interim school superintendent for the 2026-2027 school year, the Board of Education announced in an email to the school community on Aug. 10. Evans will replace Jennifer Hawn, who is departing to be the superintendent of Cupertino Union School District this week.
Evans, who previously served in the same capacity in 2022-2023, is expected to be approved at the Aug. 12 school board meeting.
Evans served as superintendent of Berkeley Unified School District for six years before retiring in 2019, and as the superintendent of Hayward Unified School District before that. Since his retirement, he has been the interim superintendent in Albany and has worked with the California Collaborative for Educational Excellence. He provides executive coaching for district leaders in the Bay Area and has been a Lecturer at the California State University, East Bay since 2022, according to the statement.
Dr. Evans started his career in education as an elementary school teacher and as a vice principal and then principal. He received his BA from University of Delaware, MA from United States International University, and earned his Doctorate of Education from the University of California, Berkeley.
