After five years serving as the city’s public works director, Daniel Gonzales is leaving Piedmont. Gonzales’ last day is July 10, according to the city.
While the city works to hire a permanent public works director, it is recommending that the City Council on Tuesday night approve the appointment of Richard Cunningham — a former public works manager in San Francisco and Albany — to serve in an interim role.
The City Administrator said in a July 6 memo to the Council that as a result of Mr. Gonzales’ announcement of his plans to depart, recruitment for a new public works director began in May of 2026, and the job opening was posted on May 22, 2026.
City Communications Officer Echa Schneider said Gonzales has been “an incredible asset to Piedmont – his achievements in only five years as director are nothing short of remarkable.” During his tenure, he oversaw the construction of a new community pool, 911 dispatch center, and other major upgrades to city infrastructure.
(The Exedra will have more on Gonzales’ departure on Friday.)
