Gov. Gavin Newsom appointed podcaster Scott Galloway to the UC Board of Regents on Wednesday, Politico reported.
Galloway co-hosts a popular tech and business podcast with Kara Swisher, a U.S. journalist who covers the business of the internet. He is also a professor of marketing at NYU. Galloway has founded several consulting and digital research companies — and has been on the boards of Urban Outfitters, Panera Bread and The New York Times, according to Politico.
Galloway, who is a Democrat, has written about isolation and loneliness among young men — an issue Newsom has also addressed, including through an executive order to help address suicide rates and disconnection among boys and young men, according to Politico.
Galloway currently lives in Florida, and has received degrees from UC Berkeley and UCLA. He has given substantial gifts to both.
While he has been critical of some elite universities for efforts to “sequester supply” by keeping enrollment low and hiking tuition, Galloway has praised the UC system for increasing first-year class sizes and expanding access by offering courses at different times of the year and day, Politico reported.
Newsom also appointed two new members to the CSU Board of Trustees: Doug Hendrickson — the the executive vice president of The Team, a major sports, music and entertainment agency — and Jackson Martinez, a student in Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s blended Bachelor of Arts in political science and Master of Public Policy program.
