The Piedmont Middle School Softball team took the field for two more games as they continued their dual-league playoff run.
First up, the Scots faced off against backyard rivals, Montera Middle School, in the OAL championship on May 20. The Scots split the season series against the Toros and entered the game with an even mix of high expectations and high anxiety. Things started off strong as the Scots led 3-2 after two, powered by a solo “Bailey Blast” homerun from 8th grader Bailey Gregovich. The Scots kept it close thanks to a key catch by 7th grader Mackenzie Ewen on a bullet line drive to left and trailed 5-3 after five before a disastrous 6th inning put the game out of reach and ultimately led to an emotional 15-5 loss and second place medals for the team.
With no time to dwell on their defeat, the Scots returned home to Witter Field the next day to take on Albany Middle School in the semi-finals of the EBMSL playoffs. The capacity crowd would not be disappointed as the matchup delivered a riveting display of high-quality play and dramatic moments in a fun-filled atmosphere.
The Scots came out strong with 8th grade ace, Madi Farboud, keeping the Cobras in check from the circle and Bailey Gregovich once again jumpstarting the offense with an early HR. The Cobras would eventually find their bite, breaking through with some aggressive base running and a few timely hits.

By the bottom of the 6th the Scots were in a tough spot, down 4-6 with a spot in the finals on the line. Undaunted, the Piedmont dugout was belting out cheers and chants as they sent the middle of the lineup to the plate to try and spark a comeback.
Leading off the inning, 6th grader Keira Spina worked her way to a full count before legging out an infield single on a sharply hit ball to third. Next up, Mackenzie Ewen fouled off multiple pitches before ripping a line drive single that easily scored Spina from third. Third to bat for the Scots and representing the winning run was veteran 8th grade catcher, Simone Tornatore. With no outs and pinch runner 6th grader Olive Dao Hoang having stolen second base, Tornatore hit a bloop single that then saw Dao Hoang opportunistically scamper home to tie the game up when the throw to third squirted away from the defense.
With the home dugout now in a full-fledged frenzy and Tornatore having advanced to 3B on a passed ball, Abby Gregovich strode to the plate and calmly smacked a single through the left side.
Tornatore scored easily, trotting home with arms raised, completing an epic 7-6 comeback win and securing the team a championship rematch vs the Montera Toros on Tuesday 5/26.
