Piedmont Middle School Girls Softball notched its first win of the season in dominant fashion on Monday, March 30, at Witter Field, beating El Cerrito’s Korematsu Middle School 10-0 in 4 innings.
The Scots are led by a talented core of 8th graders who set the tone on both offense and defense. Bailey Gregovich and Madi Farboud both pitched nearly flawlessly in the shutout, striking out 6 while yielding only 4 hits and not walking a batter. Catcher Simone Tornatore went the distance behind the dish, not allowing a single passed ball and making a key tag out at home to stop a run.
Defensive gems also came from 6th grader Keira Spina, who made a sensational catch at short with the bases loaded in the first that deflated Korematsu’s early surge, and from 7th grader Mackenzie Ewen, who snared a sharp liner to left in the third inning.
The Scots offense was spurred by Farboud, 3-3/3RBI, Ewen 2-2/2RBI as well as a host of other contributors up and down the lineup, with Spina, Clara Blanchard, Olive Dao-Hoang, Cate Penrod, and Evie Joerger all notching RBIs on the day.
Middle school softball is a relatively new sport to Piedmont, with its inaugural year at PMS in 2025. Many players started young, playing recreational softball and baseball through Piedmont Baseball and Softball Foundation. Last year the Scots made it to the middle school championship but lost to Berkeley’s Willard Middle School.
This season, Piedmont Middle School expects to play Albany; King, Longfellow, and Willard in Berkeley; and schools in the Oakland Athletic League. Next up, the Scots will face off against Albany Middle School after Spring Break on Thursday, April 16, at 6 p.m. at Witter Field.
