Team bald eagle prevails in annual PHS Bird Calling contest

A tribute to the bald eagle won the day at the 57th annual Bird Calling Contest crown last Friday night in Alan Harvey Theater.

Piedmont High School students Theo Ferguson, Dinar Kidane, Diego Kuenke, Laurel Minor, and Matt Steimle performed a humorous skit that highlighted some of the raptor’s distinctive features.

Judges Jaime Chaves, Mercedes Foster, and Michael Poryes rated the groups on “authenticity of call,” “poise and delivery,” and “content of introduction.”

Second place went to the peacock team: Amelia Addington, Sasha Andrews, Alison Atanasio, Collin Cameron, Caleb Canada, Amelia Carter, Kirstin Fedor, Lila Schwab.

Third place went to the American woodcock group of Chaz Amit-Guite, Declan Murphy, and Ben Wakefield.

Students Skye Prata and Luke McAuliffe served as Masters of Ceremony and Randall Berger, PHS ’73, returned with his rendition of the red-headed duck.

The PHS Jazz Trio of Noah Maximo Miller (piano), Deniz Radzik (drums), and Erik Venner (guitar) provided entertainment.
