City officials encourage families to use new pick-up/drop-off zone for Havens Elementary

City of Piedmont

New Havens drop-off zone on Highland Avenue across from the school.

From March 3 City of Piedmont press release:
Havens Elementary families can help reduce congestion and improve pedestrian safety in the Civic Center by using a new pick-up and drop-off zone on Highland Avenue across the street from the school, on the north side of Highland (westbound direction).

Families approaching Havens from the south part of town should use the new white curb zone, which was added in January, instead of turning on Vista or Craig:
• Pull into the new white curb zone across the street from Havens
• Drop off your student
• A crossing guard is positioned to assist students across Highland Avenue
• Continue on Highland Avenue
The crossing guard will assist students in crossing Highland to reach campus.

Reducing turn movements improves safety for students, families, and other road users during high-traffic school periods and helps reduce congestion in the Civic Center.

Outside school drop-off and pick-up hours
Parking is allowed in the white curb zone outside of school drop-off and pick-up hours.

Parking update: New ADA spaces added; additional 2-hour parking will become available when the pool opens
The new drop-off zone was one part of a series of striping changes in the Civic Center area, designed to
• improve safety and reduce congestion during Havens Elementary drop-off and pick-up
• add more visitor parking to support increased Civic Center activity when the new Community Pool opens
• provide additional ADA parking
• align striping with a new state law (AB 413), with new reb curbs near corner approaching crosswalks, improving pedestrian visibility

These updates were approved by the City Council in May 2025 following several months of public discussion and a community survey completed by nearly 500 residents.

Still to come: Reconfiguration of Bonita Avenue to one-way traffic
A future phase of the Civic Center parking plan is planned for next summer and will include:

• Converting Bonita Avenue between Vista Avenue and Oakland Avenue to one-way traffic (northbound toward Oakland Avenue)
• Eliminating the school drop-off zone on Bonita
• Adding additional ADA, time-limited, and employee parking spaces on Bonita

The City Council approved the circulation and parking changes for the Civic Center in May 2025 after several months of discussion. The discussion was informed by a community survey completed by over 500 residents.
