Why PMS is offering a girls futsal program this spring

This spring marks an exciting milestone for Piedmont Middle School Athletics as we proudly introduce Girls Futsal for the very first time.

The inaugural season will begin March 16 and run through May 21, with practices and games held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 3–5 p.m. Participation is open to PMS-enrolled 6th to 8th graders, and registration is now open.

The addition of Girls Futsal is a true example of community voice, student leadership, and data-driven decision-making in action.

Last fall, PMS 7th grader and ASB Vice President Harper Maing reached out directly to our recreation director to request a meeting about bringing soccer to the middle school sports program. On Sept. 15, Harper presented a thoughtful and well-researched proposal to the recreation department and sports staff. Her presentation included participation data, statistics, comparisons with neighboring middle schools offering soccer or futsal, and insights into what seasons those programs run. Her initiative sparked an important conversation: How can we better meet the interests and needs of our students, especially our girls?

At the same time, Piedmont Recreation Department has been actively working toward compliance with AB2404: Gender Equity in Youth Sports, with a goal of achieving a 50/50 gender balance across all PMS sports offerings. We recognized that some existing programs were struggling to reach that balance. To better understand community interest, PRD conducted a “Girls in Sports” survey in 2023 and November 2025. The survey results were clear: soccer consistently ranked as one of the top sports girls in Piedmont are most interested in playing or are already playing outside of school. Using Harper’s proposal, survey data, and our gender equity goals, Girls Futsal emerged as the right opportunity.

Futsal is a dynamic, fast-paced, indoor version of soccer that emphasizes quick footwork, teamwork, and ball control. It’s an excellent way for players to sharpen their soccer skills, stay active, and build confidence during the off-season. This new program will focus on skill development, sportsmanship, teamwork, confidence on and off the court, and having fun while competing.

Whether students are new to the sport or experienced players, Girls Futsal offers a welcoming and competitive environment to grow as athletes and teammates. To ensure a high-quality experience, PRD has partnered with Dan Chubbock and Ray Head from Piedmont Soccer Club to help facilitate the program.

The launch of Girls Futsal represents more than just a new team, it reflects PRD’s commitment to listening to students, responding to community input, and continuously strengthening our middle school athletic offerings. We are proud of the leadership shown by our students, grateful for the feedback from families, and excited to expand opportunities that better serve the interests of PMS athletes.

We look forward to seeing our student-athletes take the court this spring and make history as the first Girls Futsal team at Piedmont Middle School.
