Jewelry taken from Alta Avenue residence
A suspect was caught after allegedly burglarizing a residence on Alta Avenue. The crime was reported on Feb. 16. An unknown suspect entered a residence through a sliding window in the garage, according to Piedmont Police Capt. Chris Monahan. The homeowners returned home from vacation around 10:18 a.m. and according to Monahan, likely interrupted the suspect.
The suspect fled by jumping from a second floor window onto the garage and then to the ground. About $200 worth of jewelry was reported stolen. En route, police saw a man carrying a red drawstring backpack walking down Scenic Avenue.
After leaving the scene, the officer who had seen the individual circulated in the area. She saw the same person on Highland and Blair avenues. The man fled when he saw the officer.
At 11:22 a.m., a suspect matching the same description was seen in the rear of a residence on Linda Avenue.
At 1:59 p.m., police were called to a residence on Linda Avenue for a cold residential burglary report. Those victims began receiving alerts that someone used their Apple Pay in a Burger King in Hayward. Video surveillance there matched the suspect description of the original Piedmont burglary.
A warrant was issued and the suspect was arrested over the weekend.
On Feb. 14, police responded to a report of disturbing the peace at the Ace Hardware on Grand Avenue. The call came in at 12:01 p.m. According to Monahan, the male adult, who was in a wheelchair, was known to police and had an outstanding warrant. After being detained, a dirk/dagger was found on his person, according to Monahan. The suspect was taken to Highland Hospital to be medically cleared before he was taken to Santa Rita Jail in Dublin.
On Feb. 15, Piedmont police were dispatched to a reported sedan stopped for several minutes on Grand Avenue. The report came in at 1:05 a.m. Police contacted the driver, who police said appeared to be under the influence of a drug. Police arrested the driver for DUI, cited him and released him to a family member due to his age, according to Monahan.
Just after midnight on Feb. 17, police observed a vehicle on Pleasant Valley Road approaching Piedmont Avenue without its lights on. The silver 2009 Honda Fit could not maintain its lane, according to Monahan, and was partially on the wrong side of the road at times.
The vehicle was pulled over. The woman driving showed signs of intoxication, according to Monahan, and admitted to police she had consumed alcoholic beverages.
The driver took field sobriety tests but refused a preliminary alcohol screening. She agreed to a blood test. She was taken to Santa Rita Jail and booked for DUI.
