Piedmont Middle School Principal Karyn Shipp to retire after 28 years with the district

In a letter shared with Piedmont Middle School families today, Principal Karyn Shipp announced her decision to retire at the end of the current school year. Shipp joined the district in 1997. She was appointed PMS principal in 2022 following a 9-year tenure as assistant principal.

A Personal and Professional Transition

I want to share some important news with you directly. After much reflection and many heartfelt conversations with my family, I will be stepping down from my role as Principal of Piedmont Middle School.

Serving as principal of PMS has been one of the greatest honors of my professional life. I am incredibly proud of what our students, staff, and families have accomplished together. PMS is a flourishing school where students feel known, supported, and challenged. That strength comes from our dedicated educators, engaged families, and remarkable students. It has been a privilege to partner with you in supporting their growth.

This decision comes as I prioritize my family and my health. Creating more balance in this season of life is important to me, and this transition will allow me to do that.  For those of you who have known me for many years, you understand how much this school and this role have meant to me. This was not an easy decision. I ask for a bit of grace and space as I navigate this change, both personally and professionally.

Please know that I remain fully committed to ensuring a smooth and thoughtful transition. PMS is strong because of its people and its programs, and that foundation will continue. I am grateful for your partnership, your trust, and the many ways you support our school.

Shipp began her career with the district as a physical education teacher at Piedmont High School and subsequently served as a department chairperson, Women’s Athletic Director, Women’s Varsity Soccer Coach, WASC Coordinator, and Assistant Principal during her time at Piedmont High School, District Superintendent Jennifer Hawn wrote in an email to the school community.

We thank Karyn Shipp for her dedicated service to Piedmont Middle School as Principal for the last 4 years. Next week, I will update our community on next steps for hiring the next Principal of Piedmont Middle School.

Hawn also thanked Shipp for her service to Piedmont Middle School:

Ms. Shipp transitioned to Piedmont Middle School as Assistant Principal in 2013, where she was instrumental in fostering a positive school culture and driving program success … she has since led the school to significant gains in both academic and social-emotional student outcomes, achievements recently recognized by the prestigious Schools to Watch Award in December 2025.
