Highlanders fall behind early

Piedmont High School’s girls soccer team surrendered two first half goals, then rallied, but came up short. The Highlanders lost to Berkeley, 2-1 on January 30 at Witter Field.

Piedmont fell to 7-5-2 on the season, 2-3-1 in West Alameda County Conference Foothill Division play.

The Yellowjackets got off to a strong start. Terren Davis put them up 1-0 with a show from 25 yards out.

Berkeley quickly made it 2-0 when freshman Cecily Worthington got loose behind the Highlanders defense and put a shot inside the near post. The score remained 2-0 into halftime.

Piedmont got more offense going after the break. Olivia Nealon and Miranda Liu had successive chances at the 45-minute mark.

In the 54th minute, Ayla Blanford sent a long pass to Liu, who set up Nealon for the goal.

Arden Sorensen-Wald sent a long shot in later in the half but it just missed over the goal.

Piedmont is next scheduled to host Castro Valley on February 4.
