Every seat was filled in the Alan Harvey Theater for Piedmont’s annual MLK Day celebration, hosted by the Piedmont Anti-Racism and Diversity Committee and the City of Piedmont on Monday. This year’s theme — “Chaos or Community: Choosing Our Future ” — featured US Congresswoman Lateefah Simon (CA-12) in conversation with UC Berkeley Assistant Professor of Journalism Lisa Armstrong, and remarks by Alameda County Supervisor Nikki Fortunato Bas.

“With everything that’s happening around the country, especially in Minnesota, it was heartening to come together as a community and celebrate Dr. King,” said PADC President Ellen Lee. “Congresswoman Simon fired up the audience and reminded us not to forget our history. As a parent, I especially loved seeing the Piedmont Middle School students and their call to action, as well as the Destiny Arts dancers and their spoken word and expressive movement. The city of Piedmont and our volunteers were instrumental in making this event happen, and we’re always looking for people to help us organize community events and educational programs!”
