Fatal collision closes West Oakland BART

A woman died after being hit by a BART train at the West Oakland station Friday afternoon, a spokesperson for the transit agency said.

The collision occurred at about 2 p.m. and prompted major delays for trains on the Friday commute into the evening. The West Oakland station remained closed as of about 4 p.m., although transbay service continued because trains passed through the station on the opposite tracks, BART spokesperson Chris Filippi said.

Filippi said there is no indication of foul play in the woman’s death.

BART temporarily suspended Green Line and Red Line service to help mitigate the flow of trains, Filippi said. Passengers were also encountering delays further east on the system because of an equipment problem on the trackway at the Orinda station.
