Miranda Liu had a goal and an assist and Emily Hu scored in her varsity debut to help lead the Piedmont High School girls soccer team to a 3-1 win over visiting San Leandro on Jan. 20 at Witter Field.
It was the second consecutive win for the Highlanders, who are now 6-3-2 on the season, 1-1-1 in West Alameda County Conference Foothill Division play.
Liu scored the game’s first goal at 10 minutes. The play started with McKenna Small passing to Ayla Blanford on the left side. She then advanced the ball to Liu, who scored on a left-footed shot.
Liu had another chance shortly thereafter, but hit the post.
Liu and Blanford reversed roles in the 33rd minute, with Liu sending a cross to Blanford, who tucked the ball in for a 2-0 lead. That was the score at halftime.
The Pirates got a goal back in the 58 th minute when Viviana Garcia took a pass from Valerie Sandoval and put it home.
Later, an Arden Sorensen-Wald corner kick found Hu, who put the ball in.
On Jan. 16, Piedmont defeated visiting Alameda, 4-0. Sorensen-Wald scored the first goal on a direct kick in the first half. Sorensen-Wald came back for a second goal before halftime, putting the ball in from about 25 yards out.
In the second half, Liu got loose down the right side after taking a pass from Olivia Nealon and made it 3-0. Liu got her second goal of the game when she beat the defense and took a long pass from Sorensen-Wald on the right side and beat goalkeeper Doris Pan with the shot. Piedmont is next scheduled to face undefeated Bishop O’Dowd on the road on Jan. 23. The Highlanders will then host Encinal on Jan. 28.
