Piedmont High School’s girls soccer team pulled out a 1-0 win at Marin Academy on Dec. 13.
The game was scoreless at halftime. The Highlanders Rachel Long had a save on a direct kick to keep it so. A handball was called on the Wildcats and Miranda Liu made the penalty kick in the 55th minutes for the only goal of the game.
It was the first win of the season for Piedmont and raised its record to 1-2-1.
On Dec. 10, the Highlanders fell at Cardinal Newman, 4-0. The Cardinals are a longtime rival for Piedmont, with the teams meeting multiple times in the North Coast Section playoffs. Last year, the Highlanders won a regular season game against Cardinal Newman.
Nina Khoury and Clover Chavez scored goals in the first five minutes to give the Cardinals a quick 2-0 lead. That was the score at halftime.
Nathali Mendoza put the game away with two goals in the second half. The first came early in the half when Mendoza pounced on a loose ball in front of the Piedmont net. She got her second on a shot from the left side to the far corner of the net.
Stephanie Lee and Chloe Toyama had chances for the Highlanders. Liu missed the Cardinal Newman game with an injury.
