Highlanders open season with three wins

The Piedmont High School girls basketball team opened its season by sweeping to the title in its own Paris Twins Classic.

The Highlanders opened the tournament on December 11 with a 91-35 win over Oakland. Andrea Martin led the way with 21 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. She also had six blocked shots and two steals. Savannah Dennig and Alexa Ba each had 19 points. Ba added six rebounds. Dennig had seven rebounds and three assists.

Jenelle Solis had 14 points and 11 assists.

Piedmont jumped out to a 25-6 lead after the first quarter and never looked back.

On December 12, the Highlanders defeated Vanden, 83-43. Martin again led the way with 27 points and seven rebounds. Ba had 17 points to go along with six rebounds. Solis had 16 points and five assists while Dennig had 14 points and four rebounds. Taylor White had eight points, 14 rebounds and eight assists.

The Highlanders broke open a 16-11 game by outscoring the Vikings 21-8 in the second quarter to take a 37-19 lead at halftime.

Piedmont claimed the tournament title on December 13 with a 64-50 win over Cardinal Newman. The Cardinals took a 17-10 lead after one and still held a 33-30 lead at halftime. But the Highlanders came roaring back, outscoring Cardinal Newman 34-17 in the second half to win going away.

Martin was again the leading scorer with 25 points. She also had five rebounds. White had a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds. She also had five steals. Solis had 10 points and six assists.

Piedmont is next scheduled to host Sacred Heart Cathedral-San Francisco on December 19 at Binks Gymnasium. The Highlanders will then host Riordan-San Francisco on December 20.
