Team gets off to good start
The Piedmont High School boys basketball team moved to 3-0 on the season after winning its opening game in the Piedmont Varsity Tournament on December 4, 58-34 over Arroyo.
Dillon Casey led the way with 22 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Beach Lorin added 18 points, six rebounds, four blocked shots and four steals.
“I thought we played solid defense tonight,” Highlanders coach Ben Spencer said. “We made them make tough shots. We didn’t shoot it well: four of 20 from 3. We got great looks and moved the ball well. We just couldn’t buy a basket. But hey, that’s basketball. Some nights you’re cold. Glad how we responded on the defensive side of the ball.”
Spencer added, “Akash Bornstein and P.J. Brayer did a lot of great things that don’t show up in the box score. Their energy was terrific!”
Frank Miller scored 22 points for the Dons.
The tournament continues through December 6.
On December 4, Piedmont beat visiting Envision Academy, 74-48. Casey and Lorin scored 17 points apeice. Casey added six rebounds and six assists. Lorin added five rebounds and four steals.
Brayer had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Lucian Fang Ring scored 10 points.
Malik McKenzie scored 20 points for the Panthers. Syrius Bell had 13.
