Name: Ginger
Family: Jonathon Silvio, Azi Rad, Chiara Silvio, and Siena Silvio
Age: 6 years old
Breed: Basenji*
Adoption story: We picked Ginger up at the San Jose airport as a surprise when she was one. She had flown from Seattle and was already house trained. We had originally wanted to get a Beagle, but we once spotted a Basenji at a carwash and were smitten. We asked the Basenji’s owner for their breeder’s info — and the rest is history.
Likes: Ginger loves when it’s sunny, cozying up by fire places, spending time with her family, going on long walks, and recognizing where she is.
Dislikes: Ginger doesn’t like getting her paws wet. She also doesn’t like it when doors are closed on her. Additionally, she dislikes eating veggies, when it rains, and being left alone.
Fun fact: Ginger is super fast. Whether she’s running around in our house or outside at parks or on hikes, she’s very speedy. One time, we were on vacation in Sea Ranch and she ran away from us. Because of her ginger color, she blended right in with the golden grass and it took us a while to find her! In addition, her mom came from the Congo, and her dad was a show dog. She had the potential to have been one too, but her teeth weren’t straight enough.
*Editor’s note: “The Basenji, Africa’s ‘Barkless Dog,’ is a compact, sweet-faced hunter of intelligence and poise….[They are] small, graceful hounds standing 16 or 17 inches at the shoulder….And yes, it’s true, they don’t bark, but they make their feelings known with an odd sound described as something between a chortle and a yodel” (from American Kennel Club website). Who knew?
