The Blotter | Traffic stop leads to stolen goods recovery

Mountain bikes, generator found in truck

A traffic stop early on the morning of November 12 led to the recovery of multiple stolen items. Police pulled over a silver Toyota Tundra pickup for alleged speeding at 3:52 a.m. at Park Boulevard and Cavendish Lane. The driver was on probation in Alameda County for identity theft, according to Piedmont Police Captain Chris Monahan. A search of the truck turned up plumbing tools, a generator and two mountain bikes.

Police contacted the business listed on the tool boxes and the owner reported that he was the victim of a construction site burglary the day before at a home in the Oakland Hills, according to Captain Monahan. He said the victim later identified three toolboxes with tools in them as belonging to his business.

One of the mountain bike’s tire pouches had an ID card. That person was contacted at her residence and discovered she was the victim of a burglary at 2:58 a.m. that morning, Captain Monahan said. He said her garage door had been forced open and her generator and two bikes (combined value of $6,500) had been stolen. Captain Monahan said she identified the items that were found in the truck.

Captain Monahan said she had video surveillance with a suspect that matched the description of the truck driver covering the camera just before the burglary.

The male suspect was arrested and taken to Santa Rita Jail in Dublin where he was charged with two burglaries, probation violations and possession of burglary tools.

On November 14 at 3:15 a.m., Piedmont Police observed a suspect “leaning in” the driver’s side door of a Toyota. A silver Infiniti with a paper license plate was seen 20 feet away, according to Captain Monahan. He said that the suspect told the officer that he was driving past, stopped, opened the door of the Toyota and was “looking for money.”

The individual was on probation. A search of his vehicle turned up a driver’s license, two credit cards, and a AAA card under different names, according to Captain Monahan. The suspect was booked for misappropriation of lost property, attempted auto burglary and a probation violation.

On November 12, Piedmont Police were on Grand Avenue when a gray 2018 Honda Civic approached “at a high rate of speed,” according to Captain Monahan. He said the officer paced the vehicle and found it was going 54 mph in a 25 mph zone. The officer also reported the vehicle was weaving.

The vehicle was pulled over and field sobriety tests were administered. A blood test was later administered. The driver was taken to Santa Rita Jail. The vehicle was towed.
