On Nov. 15, the girls and boys of the Piedmont Council’s Scouting America will hit the streets of Piedmont to help end hunger in our community. The Scouts will go door-to-door across the city collecting the incredible donations of food and funds from the Piedmont community for the Council’s 41st Annual Scouting for Food Drive. All food and dollars collected go to Alameda County Community Food Bank to support our neighbors in need of assistance.
Last year the Piedmont Council’s Scouting for Food Drive raised $13,000 in monetary gifts and an estimated 10,000 pounds of collected food items.
“We’re counting on our generous Piedmont neighbors to rise to the occasion once again and help ensure that all of us in Alameda County has access to the food they need,” shared John Langowski, the Council’s Scouting for Food Chair.
This year’s Food Drive efforts will support even more people in need. Alameda County Community Food Bank (ACCFB) reports that the ongoing government shutdown combined with high and rising costs of essentials in our area is causing a spike in hunger in Alameda County.
On Nov. 1, nearly 180,000 community members did not receive their SNAP benefits that they rely on to buy groceries. Additionally, ACCFB reports that 15,000-20,000 people in Alameda County will also lose their SNAP benefits permanently due to federal cuts in HR1 starting this month.
Donations of food, such as canned foods, peanut butter, cereal, snack bars, pop tarts, pancake or muffin mixes, crackers, cookies, instant soup, rice, beans, dry pasta, powdered milk or juice are suggested. Donations of cash and checks are also welcome.
Please place your donations in a bag or box on the street by 9 a.m. or if you have the funds, please donate HERE.
Donations of cash and checks are welcome and all funds go to the ACCFB.
Scouting programs serve youth Kindergarten through age 21, and their families. Cub Scouts is for youth K-5th grade; Scouts BSA serves youth 11-18 years old; and Venturing and Exploring serve youth 14-21 years old. The aims of Scouting across all programs are character, fitness, citizenship, and leadership skills; outdoor adventure, service, and adult mentoring are important parts of how that happens.
