The Piedmont High School girls tennis team got a pair of big wins in West Alameda County Conference play, setting up a huge match with Bishop O’Dowd.
Piedmont defeated visiting Alameda on Oct. 22, 4-3. The teams split the singles matches and the Highlanders took two out of three doubles matches. Piedmont’s No. 1 doubles team of Emma Chan and Samantha Huynh outlasted Caroline Sue and Sophie Featherstone, 2-6, 7-6 (2), 10-5. The Highlanders No. 3 team of Chiara Silvio and Leela Sivakumar defeated Shilla Smith and Natalie Gilbert, 6-4, 7-5. The Hornets Nora Lloyd and Zoey Jalleh won the No. 2 match over Inara Mehta and Maddie Tran, 6-3, 6-0.
Piedmont’s Faith Chin beat Morgan Takao in the No. 3 singles match, 6-1, 6-2. The Highlanders Arianna Kortum defeated Olivia Shou at No. 4, 6-1, 6-1. Alameda’s Alice Chen shutout Ella Ruthven at No. 1, 6-0, 6-0. The Hornets Natalie Wong downed Kate Jumper at No. 2, 6-3, 6-4.
The next day, Piedmont beat host Berkeley, 6-1. Jumper rebounded to beat Elanna Kunis at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-3. Chin defeated Erin Liao at No. 3, 6-2, 6-0. Kortum downed Sophie Cranley at No. 4, 6-0, 6-1. The Yellowjackets got their only point when Samantha Lopatin scored a 6-1, 6-2 win over Ruthven at No. 1.
In doubles, Chan and Huynh beat Ezra Abarbanel and Rowan Cranley at No. 1, 6-3, 6-3. Mehta and Tran edged out Maya Gearen and Sarah Marsh at No. 2, 7-5, 6-4. Silvio and Sivakumar defeated Cecelia Grant and Cambria Frozena at No. 3, 6-1, 6-2.
Piedmont was scheduled to meet visiting Bishop O’Dowd on Oct. 28 in the regular season finale.
