Letter to the Editor | Autism is not a disease

It is an especially challenging time for autistic people and the parents of autistic children. No one deserves to be attacked for who they are. Yet right now, autistic people — and the parents of autistic children — are being devalued and misrepresented by harmful claims. False information and dangerous narratives, especially from public officials, carry weight and are damaging to our families, schools, and community.

Being autistic is part of the natural variation of humanity.  Autism is not a disease that needs to be cured and it is not caused by vaccines, Tylenol, parenting or diet.  Harmful claims cannot erase facts but they do create confusion, deepen stigma and divert attention from what individuals and their families truly need – understanding, support, and inclusion.  Autism is a neurotype that deserves acceptance and respect.

To the autistic community: harmful claims do not change the truth of our lived experience, or diminish the strength and beauty within our community. Our lives and the lives of our children matter.

To our allies: you can help counter stigma and misinformation by learning and teaching your children about the importance of neurodiversity.

You can find books and resources to support these conversations HERE.
