Highlanders face tough competition

The Piedmont High School girls tennis team dropped a pair of matches to two of stronger programs in the Bay Area.

The Highlanders lost at Campolindo on September 3, 8-1. Chiara Silvio and Inara Mehta had the only win at No. 2 doubles, defeating Bhavana Kasalanti and Abi Damen, 1-6, 6-2, 10-1.

The Cougars Ingrid O’Neil and Lindsay Foster defeated Samantha Huynh and Emma Chan at No. 1 doubles, 7-5, 6-3. Brinley Edson and Stella McLeod beat Ella Thomasson and Maddie Tran at No. 3, 6-4, 4-6, 10-8.

In singles, Bridgette Sieckert handled Ella Ruthven at No. 1, 6-0, 6-0. Summer Chang downed Kate Jumper at No. 2 by the same scores. Becca Tanner edged Faith Chin at No. 3, 7-6 (4), 7-5. Whitney Koplan beat Arianna Kortum at No. 4, 6-2, 6-4.

At No. 5, Madison Watkins defeated Lila Rosen, 6-0, 6-1. And at No. 6, Sammy Edson beat Leela Sivakumar, 7-5, 6-2.

On September 4, the Highlanders lost at Marin Academy, 4-3. Piedmont took three of four singles matches but was swept in doubles.

Ruthven downed Ann McDermott at No. 1 singles, 6-7 (6), 6-4, 10-7. Chin defeated Rani Haddad at No. 3, 6-1, 6-3. Kortum beat Alex Trombo at No. 4, 6-0, 6-0. Zoe Massey took the No. 2 match for the Wildcats over Jumper, 6-3, 6-4.

In doubles, Jane McDermott and Lily Weaver beat Huynh and Chan at No. 1, 6-0, 6-4. Walker Young and Reese Goodenough downed Silvio and Mehta at No. 2, 6-3, 7-6 (5). At No. 3, Lucy Robinson and Sky Wenner defeated Thomasson and Sivakumar, 6-4, 6-3.

Piedmont was next scheduled to play at San Leandro on Sept. 9 and at Acalanes on Sept. 10.
