Girls tennis | Busy week for Piedmont nets four wins

The Piedmont High School girls tennis team had a busy week with four wins in six matches including the consolation championship at the James Logan tournament.

The Highlanders opened with a 7-0 win at San Leandro on September 9. Faith Chin beat Aileen Dang at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-3. Arianna Kortum downed Megan Nguyen at No. 2, 6-4, 6-0. Leela Sivakumar defeated Morgan Pittman at No. 3, 6-1, 6-0. And Ella Thomasson shutout Katie Ng at No. 4, 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles, Samantha Huynh and Emma Chan defeated Madelyn Tsubamoto and Sofia Huang in No. 1 doubles, 6-0, 6-0. Chiara Silvio and Amalia Angulo downed My Vo and Elizabeth Sun at No. 2, 6-0, 6-0. Paige Chin and Amelia Oldrin beat Thi Tran and Hao Nguyen at No. 3, 6-0, 6-0.

On Sept. 10, Piedmont lost 6-3 at Acalanes. Faith Chin got the only singles win for the Highlanders, beating Grace Colaco at No. 3, 6-4, 6-1. The Dons Elisabetta Sokolova defeated Ella Ruthven in a terrific match at No. 1, 4-6, 6-2, 10-6. Aamena Shipchander downed Kate Jumper at No. 2, 6-3, 6-3. Emily Roberts beat Kortum at No. 4, 6-4, 6-2. Audrey Tseng handled Sivakumar at No. 5, 6-1, 6-2. Jasmine Taylor defeated Thomasson at No. 6, 6-0, 6-2.

In doubles, Silvio and Inara Mehta beat Sadie Moise and Grace Britto at No. 2, 6-3, 5-7, 10-6. Piedmont’s Maddie Tran and Lila Rose took the No. 3 match over Hetty Lofting and Riley Zirkel, 3-6, 6-3, 10-5. The Acalanes duo of Lauren Foster and Ridhi Patel defeated Huynh and Chan, 6-4, 3-6, 10-7.

On Sept. 12, the Highlanders opened the James Logan Tournament with a 7-0 win over Moreau Catholic. Ruthven beat Rhea Raj at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0. Jumper dominated Heera Murray at No. 2, 6-0, 6-1. Chin downed Matyida Bobkowska at No. 3, 6-1, 6-0. Rosen defeated Enny Wang, 6-3, 6-4.

In doubles, Tran and Chan downed Olivia Au and Jenna Bulanadi at No. 1, 8-2. Mehta and Sivakumar beat Tina Chu and Megan Hoang at No. 2, 8-3. Angulo and Oldrin defeated Sofia Garcia and Veronica Bao, 8-3.

Next, Piedmont fell to California later the same day, 5-2. Chin got the only singles win for the Highlanders, beating Mahita Chava at No. 3, 6-4, 6-4. The Grizzlies Sachika Kamath defeated Ruthven at No. 1, 6-0, 6-2. Hana Skulan downed Jumper at No. 2, 6-3, 6-2. Ferraro Zhang beat Sivakumar at No. 4, 6-4, 6-2.

In doubles, Tran and Chan defeated Arthi Koduru at No. 1, 9-8 (3). California’s Kylie Long and Lam Nguyen beat Mehta and Silvio at No. 2, 8-6. Swastika Pakhrayal and Sydney Wright downed Thomasson and Chin at No. 3, 8-3.

On Sept. 13, Piedmont defeated Emerald, 5-2. Jumper beat Disha Mehta at No. 2 singles, 7-6 (9), 6-3. Chin downed Pavi Kalra at No. 3, 6-1, 6-1. Kortum routed Shreya Bansal at No. 4, 6-0, 6-1. Emerald’s Amber Wang defeated Ruthven at No. 1, 4-6, 6-4, 10-7.

In doubles, Chan and Silvio downed Sarayu Kunnaruvath and Kashvi Gupta at No. 2, 8-4. Thomasson and Rosen beat Vedika Agrawal and Avani Singh at No. 3, 8-3. The Aeronauts Emma Do and Tanvi Kollu defeated Huynh and Tran at No. 1, 8-6.

Piedmont’s final match of the tournament was a 6-1 win over Berkeley. Jumper beat Rowan Cranley at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-1. Chin handled Sophie Cranley at No. 3, 6-1, 6-1. Kortom beat Cid Frydman at No. 4, 6-0, 6-1. The Yellowjackets Samantha Lopatin defeated Ruthven at No. 1, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7.

In doubles, Huynh and Tran beat Cecelia Grant and Cambria Frozena at No. 1, 8-2. Chan and Silvio defeated Maya Gearen and Sofia Bloom at No. 2, 8-2. Angulo and Oldrin downed Charlotte Cranley and Adaya Jubb-Miller at No. 3, 9-7.

Piedmont was next scheduled to play at Arroyo on Sept. 16, and then host Lick- Wilmerding-San Francisco on Sept. 17.
