The Blotter | Man passed out in car arrested

A man was found slumped over the steering wheel in a vehicle the morning of July 25. A report came in for a welfare check. Officers were dispatched to Linda and Grand avenues at 7:54 a.m.

The driver was initially unresponsive, according to Piedmont Police Captain Chris Monahan. The driver seat was reclined. Officers said he was sweating profusely and had a white substance on his sweater. After police knocked on the window and summoned the fire department, the individual appeared to wake up but refused to open the door or window, according to Captain Monahan. He said police “breached” the window and then detained the individual.

Captain Monahan said the man showed signs of being under the influence and after being medically cleared, was arrested for narcotic use and possession as well as resisting arrest.

On July 30, a report of a burglary in progress on Nova Drive came in at 3:47 a.m. Police arrived and the suspect began walking towards Grand, according to Captain Monahan. The suspect was described as a male in his 20s with a black ski mask, light-colored hoodie with the word “homies” on it, black or dark grey cargo pants and dark shoes.

An investigation determined the garage door had been broken into, Captain Monahan said, and some kind of tool was used to break a padlock. Two trucks parked nearby appeared to have been “rifled” through, according to Captain Monahan.

The loss is unknown, but Captain Monahan said there was damage to the garage and a security camera.

Also on July 30, a residential burglary took place at approximately 6:33 a.m. on Olive Avenue. Three suspects reportedly took the keys to a white 2022 BMW M240i. The three had come to the address in a green Dodge Durango and fled in that vehicle along with the BMW, according to Captain Monahan.

The BMW was found in Oakland and the occupant was arrested, Captain Monahan said.

Shortly after midnight on July 30, Piedmont Police were at Grand Avenue when a white Toyota Prius was observed traveling at a high rate of speed, according to Captain Monahan. Police stopped the vehicle and the officer said he observed signs of intoxication. The driver failed a field sobriety test and was found to have cocaine on his person, Captain Monahan said. Blood was drawn and the driver was arrested for DUI and possession of narcotics.
