Marin County supervisors are on the verge of buying a vacant lot in Point Reyes Station for a homeless shelter.
The acquisition, if approved at a meeting Tuesday, would help clear the way to house people being displaced by the National Park Service’s acquisition of 12 ranches in the Point Reyes National Seashore to better serve the area’s native tule elk.
Households on those ranches will be required to vacate by early next year, under a settlement between ranchers, environmentalists and the Park Service. The deal was a factor in the board’s declaration of a shelter crisis in March, according to the county.
The shelter is proposed for a one-acre lot at 6th and B streets in unincorporated Point Reyes Station. The site is two blocks from Shoreline Highway and the downtown business district.
The county plans to put at least 12 homes on wheels on the lot. Its long-term goal is to turn the property into permanent affordable homes, the county said in a press release Friday.
Details about infrastructure, parking, and environmental safeguards will be developed through a later process, the county said.
