The City Council on Monday night approved a $748,000 Alameda County grant to improve pedestrian safety at several points along Moraga Avenue. The Council approved a resolution to apply for the county grant in October 2024. The total cost of the project is estimated at $998,000, and includes $250,000 in matching funds from Measure BB, Gas Tax and SB-1 Funds. There is no impact to the General Fund, according to the staff report.

From the city staff report:

Moraga Avenue is one of few arterial roadways within the City of Piedmont eligible for regional transportation funding. The corridor is currently well traveled and also includes the future Moraga Canyon Specific Area. The roadway features several crosswalks as prominent pedestrian crossings for school children. The 2014 Piedmont Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan (PBMP), and the 2021 Piedmont Safer Streets Plan (PSS) identify four such locations at the following intersections:

Moraga Avenue at Ramona
Moraga Avenue at Highland
Moraga Avenue at Mesa
Moraga Avenue at Red Rock Road

The improvements include permanent bulb-outs, and the associated safety improvements, including high visibility crosswalks, new pedestrian ramps, Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs), refreshed street paint and new signage, per the report.

Design is expected to begin this fiscal year, and construction will start in May 2026 and continue through September 2026.
