Sanitation strike impacts Piedmont trash pick-up | UPDATES

Trash bins awaiting pick-up in Piedmont as the sanitation strike enters a second week.

Organics collection has resumed but general trash collection continues to be disrupted, irregular, and unpredictable as talks fail between Republic Services and the Teamsters.

The city said on Tuesday that there were no new updates from Republic Services regarding when trash pick-ups might resume a regular schedule.

The San Franciso Chronicle and other local news outlets continue to report that the nationwide strike is affecting cities throughout the Bay Area.

Republic Services told the Chronicle in a statement that it was unable to come to an agreement with the Teamsters during Tuesday’s negotiations. Further negotiation between the two sides is not scheduled, officials said.

Keep carts out until collected

Everyone should:

  • Keep your carts out curbside until they are collected.
  • Once a waste stream is collected, bring that cart in until your next regular collection day.

The visual indicator of what carts have been picked up will help City staff confirm collection status reports during ongoing field surveys.

The City of Piedmont said on Tuesday evening that a Republic Services regional work stoppage is impacting waste collection for Piedmont customers.

A nationwide sanitation strike is underway according to local news reports.

The city says it is “actively working with Republic Services to understand the expected duration of the service interruption and determine plans for timely resumption of services in Piedmont. When new information becomes available, we will post updates on the City website.

With questions related to residential waste collection, customers should call the Republic Services Piedmont support center at 1-800-320-8077.

Republic Services issued the following statement this afternoon regarding the work stoppage:

“Republic Services is in contract negotiations with IBT 439, the union representing some of our employees at Forward Landfill.  Those employees are engaged in a temporary work stoppage and are picketing at other Republic Services Bay Area locations. As a result, we anticipate temporary service delays for some recycling and waste collection customers in the area. We are adjusting our operations to ensure our ability to continue providing service during this situation.  We apologize for any inconvenience this situation may cause. We respect the rights of our employees to engage in collective bargaining and are committed to meeting the service needs of this community.”
