From a Piedmont native, Emmy award winning television journalist turned Broker Associate at The Grubb Co., UCLA graduate, wife and mother of 3.

The 4th of July is one of my favorite days of the year. Living right on the Piedmont Parade Route means it’s the perfect time to reconnect with friends, clients, and neighbors and soak up the small-town spirit that makes our community so special.

This year, I wanted to make the day extra festive, so I booked Olanui Shave Ice. Olanui means full life.  Grant Horn and his wife Stacy own this wonderful local family business.

Grant: “Today we are serving authentic Hawaiian shave ice. We have four of our most popular flavors, so great choices. Strawberry colada, also known as tiger’s blood, mango, blue raspberry, and orange creamsicle. And you can choose some toppings, often called a snow cap with condensed milk.“

Shave ice runs deep in Grant’s family- they’ve been serving it for 40 years!

Grant: “We originally served out of a couple double rainbow ice cream shops in Fremont and Menlo Park and we’d serve local carnivals and festivals and we actually started a shave ice business, in 2010 so we’ve been doing that 15 years and recently my wife and I branched off from the family business and started Olanui to do our own thing…”

So, where can you find Olanui Shave ice, besides my front lawn on the 4th of July?

Grant: “You can find us on social media, of course, you can find us through our website Olanuishaveice.com, and we serve a variety of events, from corporate events, to weddings, to birthdays, to picnics, to the Piedmont parade, so all around the Bay Area, you can find us serving shave ice.”

The shave ice was a huge hit with all my guests — I can’t wait to have them back next year!
