A free water shuttle pilot program between Alameda and Oakland is expanding as it enters its second year to include service on Tuesdays and add more weekend trips.
The shuttle program was a project initiated by the city of Alameda that launched in July 2024 as a two-year trial to run water taxis from Jack London Square in Oakland to Bohol Circle Immigrant Park in Alameda. The Port of Oakland also contributed funding.
The shuttles will now operate Tuesdays through Thursdays from 7:20 a.m. to 8:03 p.m., and Fridays through Sundays from 7:20 a.m. to 10:16 p.m.
The increase adds a total of 35% more weekly trips, according to a news release from the Port of Oakland, which said 100,000 rides were taken in the first year of the pilot.
“We’re excited to see such strong demand for the water taxi in just its first year,” said Jonathan Veach, chief real estate officer for the Port of Oakland. “This expansion underscores the growing need for transportation options that reduce congestion and strengthen connections between Alameda and our waterfront businesses,” Veach said.
The shuttles can carry up to 31 passengers and 14 bicycles. Oakland’s stop is at the end of Broadway, and the Alameda stop is at the end of Fifth Street.
Riders and residents reacted with excitement about the water shuttle service on the Port of Oakland’s Facebook page announcing the expansion.
“This started around the same time I relocated my business portrait studio to Jack London Square,” commented Sergio Gomez. “One more reason to love this area!”
“This shuttle makes it possible for my kids and me to actually go to Alameda on a bike! I couldn’t be more grateful! It makes our lives so much easier,” wrote another user, Franziska McClenton.
“I loved it. Went for a bicycle ride and took it back,” wrote commenter Barb Weiss.
The Port of Oakland is working with regional transportation planners to further expand the service and integrate it into the Bay Area’s transportation system.
“The shuttle isn’t just about transit — it’s about connection,” said Matt Davis, the Port of Oakland’s chief public engagement officer. “We’re creating stronger ties between our communities, supporting local economies, and giving people an enjoyable way to travel across the Estuary.”
