The Alameda County Veterans Affairs Commission is hosting a Women Veterans Recognition Day event to celebrate the many contributions of women to our armed forces. This free public event will take place on Thursday, June 12th at 7 pm in the The Crow’s Nest of the Alameda Naval Air Museum on 2151 Ferry Point in the city of Alameda (old Naval Air Station location). The museum was founded by Marilyn York, a World War II-era veteran who served in the Navy WAVES. Event speakers include Commander Trisha Kelly, the Commanding Officer of the Alameda Naval Reserve Center, and District 3 Supervisor Lena Tam. A Quilt of Valor will also be presented to a woman veteran community awardee. Light refreshments will be provided.
About
Women Veterans Recognition Day commemorates the signing of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act, which was signed into law on June 12, 1948. The law grants women the right to serve permanently in the US Armed Services. While women have been fighting for our country since the American Revolution, their contributions have been largely unrecognized. Women Veterans’ Recognition Day became a state-recognized observance day in 2018.
Commission’s Role
In addition to other initiatives, the Alameda County Veterans’ Affairs Commission supports and promotes veterans’ observance days throughout the year to show gratitude and raise awareness for those who have served their country. This is the second known celebration of Women Veterans Recognition Day in Alameda County.
