William S. Coysh, PhD

Born in 1953 in Brooklyn to Lillian and William R. Coysh, Bill came of age in Deer Park, NY. He left Long Island for college, eventually coming west to the University of California, Berkeley, where he obtained his PhD in Clinical Psychology and stayed to build a wonderful life.

His influence included being a counseling psychologist at Cal and in private practice, the Director of Sports Medicine Services at UC Berkeley, and Clinical Director at New Bridge Foundation. After retirement, he enjoyed work with the Warriors, the Chase Center, SF Giants, and Oakland A’s.

Bill is survived by his wife and love of nearly fifty years, Ellen Garrett — a former teacher at Beach Elementary School — and their daughters Margaret (Nick) Calonge of Orinda, Kate Coysh of Milwaukee, and Sophia (Kathryn) Coysh of Oakland, granddaughters Lilly and Jackie Calonge, brother Thomas (Linda) Coysh of Deer Park, as well as nieces, nephews, and relatives in New York and California, and too darn many friends to mention.

Bill was immensely proud of and deeply devoted to his family. He left many friends on both coasts, and memories made and treasured. He loved travel, Cal, pizza, and the Yankees. Kind and thoughtful, helpful and supportive, Bill was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, colleague and friend who will be greatly missed. Roll on you Bear.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 19 at 11:00 am at the Piedmont Community Church Guild Hall at 400 Highland Ave, Piedmont CA. Please join us to remember and celebrate Bill’s life, accomplishments and lasting impacts. Stories, jokes, and tears are all welcome.
