Track and field teams take third at WACC

Highlanders win dual meet title

Sebastien Swain, Nia Kim and Andrea Martin each won individual titles and the Piedmont High School boys and girls track and field teams each took third place at the West Alameda County Conference track and field championships at Hayward High on May 7 and 9.

Swain, a sophomore, had another strong meet, winning the boys 1,600 meters in 4:24.01 and taking second in the 800, just behind winner James Prater of Bishop O’Dowd (1:57.25-1:57.33).

Kim took first place in the girls 100 hurdles in 15.62. She also finished second in the high jump at 5-feet. Kim set a Piedmont High record in the 100 hurdles earlier this season at 15.58.

Martin won the girls shot put at 34-1 ½, improving upon her own school-record. Teammate Saniyah Johnson was second at 32-2. Martin came back to finish fourth in the high jump at 4-10.

The boys 1,600 relay team also took first place in 3:31.83. The girls 1,600 relay team was second in 4:07.99. Both 400 relay teams took second with the boys running in 42.88 and the girls in 49.76.

Sam Shelby had a big meet, taking second in the boys 400 (49.89), third in the 200 (22.26) and fifth in the 100 (11.28).

Miguel Long was second in the boys triple jump (44-2 ½), third in the 300 hurdles (42.17) and fourth in both the long jump (22-2 ¾) and high jump (5-10). In April, Long took first place in a decathlon at Del Campo-Fair Oaks with 5,369 points.

Meg Foster was second in the boys pole vault at 11-0.

Ella Yasar was third in the girls 300 hurdles in 49.72. Leighton Mand was fourth in the girls 1,600 in 5:25.80 and seventh in the 800 in 2:26.89. Johnson was fourth in the discus at 96-0. Avedis Gourjian was fourth in the boys pole vault at 10-6.

Skylar Best was fifth in the girls 800 in 2:23.56 and eighth in the 3,200 in 12:38.18. Alina Shahid was fifth in the girls discus at 88-4. Henry Mitchell was fifth in the boys pole vault at 10-0.

The boys team recently completed a 5-0 dual meet season to win the WACC Foothill division dual meet title. The girls went 4-1 and finished second to Castro Valley.

Next up is the North Coast Section Bayshore championship on May 17 at Vallejo High. Top athletes from that meet will advance to the NCS Meet of Championships on May 23-24 at Dublin High.
