New seasons begin May 6 in first round. The girls play at Witter and the boys at Foothill. Both games are at 7 p.m.
Piedmont High School’s lacrosse teams both made the North Coast Section Division 2 playoffs, giving both squads a fresh start to the season.
The girls team received the sixth seed and will host No. 11 Cardinal Newman on May 6 at 7 p.m. The winner will face the winner of No. 3 Lick-Wilmerding-San Francisco-Sonoma Valley on May 8. Dougherty Valley received the top seed and a first round bye.
The semifinals are scheduled for May 13 and the championship game for May 15.
The boys are a 13 seed and will play at Foothill on May 6 at 7 p.m. The winner will face the winner of No. 5 Terra Linda-College Park on May 8.
Last year, the Highlanders girls team made it to the second round, where they lost to Acalanes.
This year’s team lost to in overtime to Berkeley in the West Alameda County Conference playoffs at home on April 30, 17-16. Coach Carlton Chan called it “a brutal loss,” as Piedmont was up five at one point. The Yellowjackets took the lead late and had a chance to ice the game, but after an offensive foul was called on Berkeley, Chloe Graham was able to score the tying goal.
In the overtime, Piedmont had the ball but after a turnover, Violet Potts netted the game-winner. It was her fifth goal of the game.
Graham and Peyton Watson each had seven goals to lead the Highlanders. Jameson Sanford and Friedie Schickendanz had single goals. Schickedanz also had four assists. Sophie Santander had eight saves.
Whitney Borovicka had five goals and four assists for Berkeley. Nella Shear and Skylar Hockenbrock both had two goals. Kate Imen, Sabine Rosen and Kat Burmester had the other goals. Piedmont is now 8-9 on the year. Cardinal Newman is 8-7. The teams have two common opponents – both lost to Las Lomas. The Cardinals lost to Rancho Cotate twice in their league while Piedmont beat Rancho Cotate in a nonleague match.
Piedmont’s boys team is 4-10 entering the playoffs after missing the bracket last year.
