A one-day strike by Oakland teachers scheduled for Thursday has been called off.

Officials with the Oakland Education Association, which represents nearly 3,000 teachers and other school staff, said Wednesday they have reached an agreement with the Oakland Unified School District to avert the strike.

“The agreement restores budget cuts critical to retaining more than 120 experienced high school teachers at the district’s most difficult-to-staff school sites, including Castlemont, Fremont, and McClymonds; and restores site-based substitute teachers who provide daily classroom coverage and support at school sites,” according to an OEA news release.

The union previously said that its members authorized the strike over its claim that the district had failed to provide its leadership with certain financial documents.

OEA treasurer Vilma Serrano didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment about the size of the budget cut reductions and whether the district provided them with the financial information they were looking for.

A spokesperson for the school district didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment about the agreement.

Had it progressed as planned, it would have been the fourth OEA strike since 2019, according to district officials.
