In celebration of Children’s Fairyland’s 75th Anniversary, the beloved storybook theme park has partnered with Oakland Public Library to debut a limited-edition library card designed by 12-year-old Ezekiel Ramos, the winner of the citywide youth art contest. Beginning Friday, May 30, the card will be available at all Oakland Public Library branches while supplies last.
As part of its milestone year, Fairyland invited local children to help mark the occasion by entering the “Library Card Contest: Fairyland Edition.” Bay Area youth ages 5-12 were asked to submit original artwork inspired by Fairyland, storytelling, and imagination. Ezekiel’s vibrant and unmistakably Fairyland design—featuring park icons Willie the Whale and Ching Lung, The Happy Dragon—was selected from over 100 submissions.
“We were overjoyed to receive so many beautiful submissions from young artists who clearly love both Fairyland and the Oakland Public Library,” said Vicky Chen, the senior director of education and community engagement at Children’s Fairyland. “Ezekiel’s artwork stood out for its heart, creativity, and use of his imagination. We’re grateful for the library’s ongoing partnership and the continued support from families who believe in the magic of our institutions.”
“I thought entering the competition would be a great chance to showcase my artwork,” said Ezekiel Ramos, Fairyland’s limited-edition library card artist. “I’ve been to Fairyland many times since I was little. I took two of the most iconic figures I could think of and made it my project for a few weeks. I’m proud to know that people will use my art in their everyday lives, and I hope other kids see it and feel like they can do something like this, too.”
For Ezekiel’s family, the connection to both organizations runs deep.
“We are proud that Ezekiel’s creativity is being recognized, especially by Fairyland and Oakland Public Library, which have both played an important role in our family,” said Kirstin Hernandez, Ezekiel’s mother. “We always have library books in our home and have loved attending events and summer reading challenges. Ezekiel is an avid reader in English and Spanish, and books have inspired his imagination.”
“Oakland Public Library is proud to partner with Fairyland to celebrate their 75th Anniversary with a limited-edition library card,” said Jamie Turbak, the director of library services at Oakland Public Library. “Congratulations to Ezekiel Ramos, whose playful design will be available at all our branches this summer. This collaboration celebrates the values of creativity, community, and literacy that our organizations cherish. It’s a meaningful way to honor the history of our shared commitment to inspiring young readers.”
Only 4,000 limited-edition cards will be available. Community members can request one with a valid ID at any Oakland Public Library location. Existing cardholders may transfer their account to the new card.
The limited-edition card’s release coincides with the kick-off of Summer at Oakland Public Library programming that offers a wide range of fun, educational, and creative activities for all ages, giving families even more reasons to visit their local library and celebrate the joy of reading.
